 How Does It Work?

You Can Earn an Accredited Education Without Having to Sit in a Single Class.
Advances in technology have made earning your degree easier than ever before. Through the power of the Internet, you, a busy adult, can get the accredited education you need to get ahead and increase your earning power. You do not have to sit through lectures in classes. You do not have to commute, park, arrange dependent care, and attend scheduled classes. You set the time, choose the place, and set your own schedule. You are in charge of your own education.

How Does Online Distance Education Work?
1 Enroll online, by telephone, or by mail.
2 Receive your study materials automatically online and by mail.
3 Create a study schedule for yourself.
4 Read the materials. Study and do assignments.
5 Take and pass tests online or by paper versions.

Is Distance Education Right for You?
Online education courses demand the same dedicated student effort as traditional classroom-based courses. The material is college-level and you will need self-motivation and self-discipline to succeed. Click here and take a selfassessment to determine your current skills and to learn about resources that will help you study independent of classes and lectures.

The most practical way to learn

Our proven, accredited distance education programs are the most credible, effective alternative to a traditional classroom education. Developed by experts, Independence University courses are specifically designed and developed for independent study by practitioners and professionals who have experience in their field.

How We Make Distance Education Work for You
1
Faculty and staff available. Rather than limited “office hours” and rigid class schedules, staff and faculty are at your service five days a week. Technical staff can help you with browsers, software applications, and other difficulties; student advisors can assist you with anything and everything in order to help you progress and succeed. You can get more support and services with online distance education than with on-campus education.
2
Online services available 24/7. Our user-friendly, award-winning website provides you access to IU’s Student Services. Rather than traveling to classes and sitting for quizzes and tests in the classroom, you can take them online and get your score immediately. For any questions you miss, the correct answer is given so that you can immediately learn as you take tests. Instead of traveling to the registrar’s office, you can register, review your transcript, get your grades or account status, and see other information at your fingertips, online.

3
Online library — Rather than having to travel to the library, park your car, and search for books and reference materials, you can connect to our vast online library containing thousands of books, thousands of Internet references, and more. You can use the Internet, e-mail, threaded conversations, and other technology to interact with fellow students as you participate in group and team activities. E-mail and chat allow you to communicate with your professors and with fellow students. You gain a deeper understanding of the material and can exchange opinions and ideas with people in the same course(s).
4
Study materials available 24/7. Instead of attending lectures, you walk step-by-step through a course study guide. The course study guide is your own instructor in your own home, office, etc. Study guides contain learning objectives, learning assignments, self-tests, and unit exams. Depending upon the courses you take, you will receive textbooks, study guides, videotapes, and audiotapes. Just as in any traditional university, textbooks are supplied and need to be studied.

You are never alone

You study independently but you are never alone. You have access to online services, qualified instructors, a student advisor, and if needed, a tutor or study partner.

Many students team up as study partners with other willing students in their area or online. The best thing to do is enroll with a friend, colleague, or family member. Then you can study together, providing mutual motivation and support.
