Fast answers to common questions

How do I get paid for my VA-funded courses?
If you are a VA student, you will need to pay for the entire program or apply for financing. You are able to collect full time pay reimbursement from the VA if you complete your course in the allotted time. The amount of your reimbursement from the VA is based on the time you take to complete each course. Courses are certified when a final grade is awarded, and pay is based on the time for completion or training time.* The VA will pay you directly once the certification is submitted and processed.

*Training time
Training time is calculated according to IU policies and in conjunction with the VA standards for training time.

Specifically, a student who finishes a 3-credit course in 4 weeks will be considered full-time. A student who finishes a 3-credit course in 5 or 6 weeks will be considered three-quarter time. A student who finishes a course in 7, 8, or 9 weeks will be considered half-time.  A student who finishes a 3- credit course in 10 through 15 weeks will be considered less than half time, greater than one-quarter time.  And finally if a student finishes a 3-credit course in 17 or 18 weeks will be considered quarter-time or less. The VA will NOT pay for benefits if it takes longer than 18 weeks to complete a 3-credit course.  This policy applies to both undergraduate and graduate students, and the VA will pay based on this standard for training time.

**Remember, the VA will pay based on the actual time it took for course completion.  The date the VA will begin paying for your course is the FIRST activity in your course and the date the VA will stop paying is the day your final exam or final project is graded.**

Note: There are a few exceptions to this policy that will vary by program and course. These exceptions will be addressed at the time of course enrollment. Speak with the IU military education department at 1-800-481-9440 if you have any questions or need additional information.

Does IU participate in advance payment with the VA?
No. IU does not participate in advance payment as we only certify enrollment upon course completion.
