The Master of Science in Nursing prepares graduates for advanced positions in the health care environment. Four specialty concentrations are offered, allowing registered nurses to specialize in community health, gerontology, nursing administration, or wellness promotion.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of advanced practice concepts in one of the four specialty areas, including evidence-based practice, research and evaluation methods, health program evaluation, outcomes assessment and quality management, and health service organizations and management
  • The ability to evaluate advanced concepts in order to be active knowledge-makers in the nursing field
  • Active participation and contribution as nurse leaders in a variety of health care settings.

Nursing is the largest and fastest growing health occupation in the nation. Registered nurses with advanced knowledge and degrees beyond the bachelor's level are in high demand. Increasingly, management-level nursing positions require a graduate or advanced degree in nursing or health services administration. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition , median annual earnings in all health services management fields in May 2004 were $60,430. Salaries of those employed in the industries which employed the highest number of health service managers ranged from $60,000 to $87,000.
