Masters in Healthcare Administration
The Master of Science in Healthcare
Administration prepares graduates for administrative
positions within the healthcare industry. Individuals from
many different healthcare fields, particularly those with
bachelor’s degrees in clinical areas (nursing, respiratory
therapy, medical laboratory sciences, etc.) find greatly
enhanced career opportunities. Courses in a variety of areas
are presented with a specific emphasis on healthcare.
MHA Degree
Graduates of the Master of Science in
Health Care Administration will demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding of the multiple facets
of healthcare administration, including finance,
economics, information systems, marketing,
decision-making, communication, program evaluation
and strategic applications in business

ability to evaluate business management concepts in
order to be active knowledge-makers in the healthcare field

participation and contribution as leaders in a
variety of healthcare settings
The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational
Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition states that Medical and
health services managers must be familiar with management
principles and practices. A master’s degree in health
services administration or a related field is the standard
credential for most generalist positions in this field. It
further notes that for persons seeking to become heads of
clinical departments, a master’s degree in health services
administration or a related field might be required to
advance. Employment in the area of health service management
is expected to grow faster than average during the coming
decade. Median annual earnings in this field in May 2004
were $60,430. Salaries of those employed in the industries
which employed the highest number of health service managers
ranged from $60,000 to $87,000.
