Independence University belongs to a family of colleges and universities with educational roots dating back to 1891.
In 1978, IU began to offer education at a distance and operated as California College for Health Sciences. In 2005 it became Independence University, a name that more accurately reflects the institution’s broader range of programs and its philosophy that education should lead to greater independence. In 2010, Independence University merged with its affiliated institution, Stevens-Henager College, becoming a branch of Stevens-Henager’s main campus in Ogden/West Haven, Utah. The main campus is located at 1890 South 1350 West, West Haven, UT 84401.
Today, IU is comprised of four schools: the School of Healthcare, the School of Business, the School of Technology, and the School of Graphic Arts.

“We’ve geared all of our degree programs to be not only career-specific, but to be focused on that adult learner who’s coming back to school and needs additional support, needs focused curriculum, needs career-specific curriculum, rather than a lot of electives that may not really add any value to their future career.”
– Eric Juhlin
President of Independence University

Our mission is simple: Helping our students graduate, launch better careers, and gain greater independence to live the life they want as soon as possible.
At IU, our faculty aren’t just educators. They’re professionals, each with a industry specific experience in the field they teach.
Besides being fully online, what makes IU different from a traditional university? The IU student experience speaks for itself…
As a private, non-profit institution, we are independent. This means we’re uniquely suited to putting your needs first. It means that as a university we can invest in you, your instructors, your tools, your educational experience – not the other way around.
Simply put, being accredited means that when you choose IU, you can feel good about your decision. It means you’ve chosen a university that’s committed to honesty, fairness, trust, and academic integrity.
There are plenty of colleges out there, and finding those that meet tough and rigorous standards can be difficult. Having these credentials matters greatly when comparing universities and colleges, giving you the confidence you’ve made the right choice.
There is no greater level of commitment and sacrifice than that given by our men and women in our armed forces – whether active duty, reservists or veterans. We honor that commitment, and we support the transition to civilian life through personalized attention in developing a career path, help in understanding military benefits, and awarding military scholarships to qualified service members, their spouses and dependent children.
Let’s face it, life is busy. Depending on your schedule and where you live, going to class at a traditional campus may not be practical. Online learning allows you the freedom to pursue your degree anytime, anywhere. But is an online education really as good as the traditional model? The answer may surprise you. (It’s “yes”, by the way.)
This fact also shows in the migration of many students from a traditional learning structure to an online program, with students numbers in the millions!
At Independence University, our flexible online degree programs will help you prepare for employment in some of today’s most rewarding job fields. Our programs are career-focused, without elective courses that you don’t want or need. You can finish your degree in as few as 20 months!2 Contact an admissions consultant today.
