4 Strategic Tips for College Success
Updated By Staff Writer on March 31, 2020
Let’s face it, we all want to be successful in life, whether it’s in our jobs, our family life, even our education. But if you’re a busy adult going back to school for a degree, family and job commitments don’t just disappear. In fact, life may feel more like a juggling act. Plus, if you’ve been out of school for a while, chances are your study habits are a bit rusty. That’s more reason for you to learn how to work “smarter.” It’s never too late to learn new habits and strategies that can bring you education success. So, let’s get started:
- Establish a quiet place to study—Living alone, it’s easy to find a quiet, cozy spot at home. Married? Children? Pets? ... now it gets tricky. You may be tempted to play with Fluffy rather than read that next chapter. Plus, family members may think that since you’re home, interrupting you is fair game. When home distractions abound, the reality is you’ll be able to get more done in less time at your community library.
- When studying, turn off your phone—It’s a huge distraction. For phonaholics (can’t sit in a movie theater without checking their phone every 15 minutes ... you know who you are!), this is especially difficult. But every text or phone call can divert your focus and make it that much harder to get back in the zone. Turn it off ... ‘nuff said.
- Stay up on your schoolwork—If you procrastinate, you will pay for it. Once you get behind, playing catch-up can feel overwhelming. You may even consider giving up. Don’t go there! If there’s study material you don’t understand that is causing your coursework to lag, talk to your instructor right away or hire a tutor.
- Use the right tools—By that I mean use a fully functional computer and have the necessary learning materials on hand. Plus, take advantage of all the resources found online and at your local library.
