Independence University Donates 100 Tablets to Help Refugees Through the IRC

SALT LAKE CITY—Independence University (IU), an accredited online university, is proud to be able to assist in the ongoing efforts of helping refugees resettle in the United States by donating 100 tablets to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
The IRC serves people whose lives have been upended by war, conflict, and natural disasters, mainly working in countries where people don’t have the support they need to recover from crisis. The IRC resettles refugees welcomed by the United States, helping them to succeed and thrive in this country. One of the ways in which they do this is by providing refugees with access to reliable technology.
The donated tablets will be used in the IRC’s Digital Inclusion Program, which promotes digital inclusion for Refugee and New American households, said Caitlin Fellows, Development Coordinator for the IRC in Salt Lake City. “The newly arriving refugee clients who receive devices, such as laptops and tablets, utilize these digital tools to access IRC Salt Lake City programming, including job readiness, health, ESL, and digital skills training classes via digital platforms such as Zoom.”
Joseph Dunlop, the Associate Campus Director for Independence University, says the donation helps fulfill the school’s mission of spreading access to education to people living around the country. “Our purpose is to help as many people become independent through education or through organizations who sponsor individuals to help them become independent,” says Dunlop.
The 100 Supersonic Windows tablets were refurbished and re-imaged tablets from former Independence University students. The devices given to the IRC will be distributed locally to refugee households within the first three months of their arrival to the United States. To ensure all clients are able to utilize these digital tools, the families will also receive ongoing technology support from the trained IRC SLC’s Tech Squad volunteers who provide one-on-one technical support based on refugee client referrals and requests.
The donation occurred on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the IRC’s office in Salt Lake City.
