SALT LAKE CITY— Independence University kicks off its first annual “IU Gives” campaign by partnering with Utah Foster Care’s Giving Tree, delivering Christmas cheer to dozens of children in the foster care system.

For 20 years, Utah Foster Care has gone above and beyond to bring holiday magic to children living in foster homes across the state. Each child associated with the organization is able to ask for three Christmas gifts, being as specific or as general as they’d like. “To have those kids get exactly what they want on Christmas morning—that means so much to them,” says Deborah Lindner, Communications Director for Utah Foster Care. “I think we noticed that foster families sacrifice a lot having these kids in their homes… so we were looking for a way to help these families around this often very tender time of year.”

Once the gifts are collected, airmen from Hill Air Force Base then deliver the gifts to the children and families as the “Santa Brigade.” Katie Rothe, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator for Utah Foster Care says, “It is incredible to have a group of uniformed people run down the stairs with their bags of gifts, some even carrying things as big as bicycles.”

Independence University chose to help Utah Foster Care because of its mission to help children throughout Utah, where IU is located. Students at Independence University come from a broad range of life backgrounds, and it was important that the first annual “IU Gives” campaign related to current and future students.

“Education can impact the quality of a person’s life immensely,” says Dr. Alan Hansen, Executive Director of Independence University. “If there’s one message we can send, it’s that every child should have the opportunity to attend college regardless of their life story.”

Independence University is proud to assist those in the local community, especially families who do so much to help others. The university looks forward to partnering with Utah Foster Care again for future projects.
