Independence University Donates 30 Laptops to Spectrum Academy
SALT LAKE CITY—Spectrum Academy, a Utah charter school for students with high-functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, received a donation of 30 laptops on December 18, 2018 to enhance the educational experience of its students.
Spectrum Academy serves roughly 1,000 students in grades K-12 at its Pleasant Grove and North Salt Lake campuses. They received the gently used laptops from Independence University, a national online university with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
This is the second year Independence University has teamed up with Spectrum Academy for a technology donation.
Independence University Vice President Alan Hansen said donating the laptops is in line with the university’s initiative to enrich the educational experience of all students by making technology more accessible.
“Our nation is successful because of its education and entrepreneurial nature,” Hansen said. “As an entrepreneurial college, we seek to enrich the educational experience of all students. This partnership with Spectrum Academy is an excellent opportunity to further that mission.”
Spectrum Academy leaders say they strive to provide unique structured learning opportunities for students in technology, vocational, and academic areas. Many of their students respond well to technology and have difficulty with expressions of speech and written communication. The use of laptops in the classroom allows for better instruction, which can help students overcome many of their communication challenges.
