SALT LAKE CITY—The Murray City School District’s Special Education Department received a donation of over 100 tablets on May 16, 2017, which will be used to enhance the educational experience of its students.

The Murray City School District (MCSD), which serves approximately 550 students in grades K-12 in its special education program, received the new and lightly-used tablets from Independence University, an accredited, online university with headquarters in Salt Lake City.

Kelli Kercher, director of at-risk programs for MCSD, said tablets are particularly useful in the classroom for students who have difficulty writing with a pencil on paper due to a physical or sensory disability. Students will use the tablets for school work and to access the online programs used in the classroom.

“This generous donation from Independence University will allow us to put more technology right in the hands of students—preschool through adult transition age—to assist them with a variety of accessibility needs, supplement reading, math, and social skills instruction though access to various apps and online programs,” said Kercher.

Independence University Vice President Alan Hansen said donating the tablets is in line with the university’s initiative to enrich the educational experience of all students by making technology more accessible.

“Our nation is successful because of its education and entrepreneurial nature,” Hansen said. “As an entrepreneurial college, we seek to enrich the educational experience of all students, and we feel this partnership with the Murray City School District is an excellent opportunity to do that.”

Vice President Alan Hansen presented the tablets to MCSD on May 16, 2017.
