Independence University Joins Tech For Troops Project to Donate Laptops to Veterans

To support U.S. veterans in their transition from military to civilian life, Independence University has partnered with the Tech For Troops Project to provide free, refurbished computers and laptops to veterans in need and their families. Through its Good Neighbor Initiative, Independence University has donated 69 laptops to the Tech For Troops Project since the partnership began in March 2017. By donating these laptops, Independence University seeks to help the Tech For Troops Project further its mission to empower veterans with skills, computers and IT workforce training. “As an online institution of higher education, we believe that access to a computer and proper technology removes a significant barrier for individuals seeking to better themselves, either by way of education or employment,” said Independence University Vice President Alan Hansen. “We look forward to an ongoing partnership with Tech For Troops and are honored to support those who have served our country.” Post-9/11 veterans have a higher unemployment rate—5.9 percent—than any group of veterans in the last century. Tech For Troops Project's mission is to bridge the digital divide—the economic and social factors that keep individuals from having access to the internet—that exists within the veteran community, enabling them to connect with employers and develop essential computer skills. “Veterans need the opportunity to bridge that digital divide,” said Tech For Troops Project Director Mark Casper. “Creating a resume on a cell phone or applying for a job on a cell phone doesn't really work, so receiving computers and handing them out to veterans is gratifying. It's very satisfying.” As of April 4, 2017, the Tech For Troops Project has helped over 3,000 veterans get access to a computer, and it has recycled over 8,000 computers that were unable to be refurbished. Some of the organizations that have received the donated computers include Freedom Support Center, Veterans Strong Outreach, Marines Helping Marines, Association for Wounded Veterans, and others.
